Hello and a very warm welcome to all our new resident doctors joining the University Hospitals of Birmingham NHS Trust—one of the largest and most dynamic trusts in the UK.
My name is Umesh Salanke and I am the Medical Director for the Medical Academy, overseeing both postgraduate and undergraduate medical training. Whether you’re joining us as a Doctor in Training, a Locally Employed Doctor, an International Training Fellow, or as part of our SAS community—we are absolutely delighted to have you here.
The Postgraduate Medical Education department is responsible for developing, managing and delivering a range of high quality medical educational activities as required by the General Medical Council, NHS England and the Trust.
At the heart of our Trust is a commitment to excellence in clinical care, and high-quality medical education plays a vital role in achieving that. We take pride in supporting over 1,800 doctors across all stages of training, ensuring you have the resources, guidance, and opportunities to thrive—both for your professional growth and, most importantly, for the safety and care of our patients.
Here in the Postgraduate department, it is our mission to support our junior doctors throughout their educational journey, whether you are joining us via Health Education England or through the Locally Employed Doctor. Over the past year, our Postgraduate Medical Education Department has grown significantly, allowing us to expand our support, we have dedicated well being officers for our resident doctors, more support for our Locally Employed Doctors, with more Clinical Tutors and dedicated teams to guide you. We aim to be your first point of contact, helping you navigate your educational journey with confidence.

The clinical team includes various associates Medical Directors Tutors Programme Directors, Supervisors and others. The admin team is always there for you , if you need them.
And it’s not all about work! We also organise fantastic events from career fairs and LED conferences to wellbeing activities, Christmas buffets, and even the occasional hamper because we know how important it is to feel connected and valued as part of our UHB family.
