Practice Placement Team

The Practice Placement Team is a dedicated team of registered healthcare professionals and administrative support staff. The team is responsible for the overall allocation, supervision and support of pre-registration student nurses and midwives undertaking BSc and MSc degree courses.

The team also provides support to practice assessors and supervisors at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), offering guidance, advice and training in order to help them assess the students as accurately and safely as possible during their placement.

We offer pastoral care for students during their assessments in clinical placements, and provide forums, skills sessions and one-to-one meetings. We also work to create quality practice placements and increase student capacity to ensure that we prepare a future workforce ready for qualification. This helps to support the staffing challenges currently faced by the NHS by producing knowledgeable, accountable, evidence-based practitioners, who will provide exceptional care.

Sites

We provide services across Good Hope, Heartlands, Queen Elizabeth and Solihull hospitals, as well as Birmingham Chest Clinic and Solihull Community Services. We also utilise satellite renal sites and provide midwifery and paediatric support to staff and students.

Specialties

We cover a wide range of specialties, which can provide students with a broad overview of many different skills, roles, diseases and health concerns, in addition to the midwifery service. We aim to ensure students are offered varied placements, which encompass a broad overview of a patient’s journey with us and the care they would expect to receive.

Universities

We have regular links with our local universities and place students from the University of Birmingham (UoB), Birmingham City University (BCU) and University of Central Birmingham (UCB). We attend curriculum training events to ensure the courses are developed with our practice staff in order to provide the best experience possible.

Nursing courses

As we already receive students allocated from our universities, we are not responsible for applications to any nursing courses, although we do take part in student interviews. For more information about nursing or midwifery training, please contact your local university course provider.
