Postgraduate Simulation Programmes

All of the postgraduate simulation training is scheduled via easylearning. Sessions are available on multiple days and sites to help make booking as easy as possible. You can book training on any of the hospital sites. It does not need to be on the site where you work.

Before starting any high-fidelity simulation sessions, candidates must complete either a face-to-face module on human factors or complete an online course on Moodle.

Foundation Year 1

Foundation Year 1 Doctors are expected to complete one and a half days of High-Fidelity Simulation. This includes a full day of six scenarios which have been developed in-line with the UK Foundation Programme Curriculum.

They are designed to improve your awareness of a human factors approach to patient safety, as well as challenge your clinical skills. This session will provide a basis for your future postgraduate sessions and follows on from the Undergraduate Year 5 AIM simulation scenarios.

Programme for full-day Foundation Years 1 and 2 Simulation and Human Factors Training

The capacity for each course is ten doctors and up to four nursing staff.

All candidates must have completed the pre-course work around human factors.

IMT 3 Clinical & Escalation

Clinical - A stand-alone full day course for IMT3s concentrating of challenging clinical and ethical/communication dilemmas at Med SpR level.

Escalation - This course is for IMT3s to develop their leadership skills with interaction with FY1 Doctors.

ST 4 & 5 Simulation

The ST 4/5 simulation program has been designed to look more at non-technical components, specifically around communication and recognition of developing issues. This program has been designed to complement the previous IMT programs as well as be able to work as stand-alone.

The program looks at deeper aspects of communication in difficult situations, as well as the ability to multitask and problem solve. The 5 scenarios designed by experienced Educators and Consultants cover a broad range of highly emotive subjects designed to stretch the learner and prepare them for both their current role as well as future ones.

Simulation is a wonderful avenue to push one’s limits and then reflect in a safe, supportive atmosphere without the need of assessment.

Core Surgical Human Factors Simulation (CoSHFacS)

This full day course covers human factors training and awareness and is based around 6 common surgical scenarios.

The course draws closely from the Core Surgical Training Curriculum and is an opportunity for candidates from a range of roles [CSTs, JSD(S)s, ITFs, ACPs and PAs] working at SHO level to develop their Capabilities in Practice (CiPs) and/or learning needs in relation to surgical practice. It is also open for surgical nursing/theatre staff.

The course runs at Heartlands (Stratford House) and the QE (Immersion Centre, 5th floor, Heritage Building).

Places are limited to 6 learners per session and postgraduate doctors in training are advised to book/agree study leave in advance with your supervisor (others must gain agreement from their line manager to attend).
