Acute Care Common Stem (ACCS) Training Pathway

Not all Hospital Trusts across the West Midlands are able to accommodate Acute Care Common Stem (ACCS) trainees — but at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), we are proud to be able to support this programme. Our commitment to high-quality medical education and multidisciplinary collaboration ensures that ACCS trainees receive comprehensive support and exposure throughout their training journey.

The ACCS training pathway is uniquely designed to provide a broad-based foundation for doctors interested in acute and emergency care specialties. Over the course of the programme, trainees rotate through four core specialties:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Acute Internal Medicine
  • Anaesthetics
  • Intensive Care Medicine

This diverse clinical exposure equips doctors with the skills and experience needed to manage acutely unwell patients across a variety of settings. It also allows trainees to make well-informed decisions about their future career pathways, with many going on to specialise in one of the ACCS component disciplines.

At UHB, trainees benefit from working in one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK, where they are supported by experienced educators, state-of-the-art facilities, and a collaborative team environment. Our hospitals see a wide range of cases, providing rich learning opportunities that prepare trainees for the challenges of modern acute care medicine.

Whether you're at the start of your medical career or seeking a dynamic training experience, UHB is proud to support your development through the ACCS programme.
