NHS e-Referral Service

The NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS) is a national IT system that gives patients greater choice about their care and where they would prefer to be seen.

Practices using e-RS can provide more choice to patients by displaying what services providers offer while taking into account waiting times, distance and suitability.

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) continually monitors and updates its extensive directory of services to ensure referring practices have the latest information.

UHB no longer accept referral letters from GP practices for any services which are available on e-RS.

Finding the appropriate UHB service

UHB has multiple specialist clinics listed on e-RS rather than general clinics (e.g. cataract clinic or glaucoma clinic, as opposed to a general ophthalmology clinic).

The search facility within e-RS provides a list of associated clinical terms. Selecting the appropriate clinical term will display a list of services to offer the patient as a choice.

If you have any problems finding an appropriate service, please contact the e-RS team.
