Exit interviews – what to expect

If you're leaving your role at UHB, you can request an exit interview. This is your opportunity to have a one-to-one conversation with your manager or someone else, either in person or virtually. You can request an exit interview when you complete the Leaving your Role form.

What’s the purpose of an exit interview?

It’s a space for you to:

  • share the reasons behind your decision to leave
  • talk about your experience in your role, your team, and the wider Trust
  • offer suggestions that could help improve things for others in the future

An exit interview gives you the chance to have a real conversation to explain your thoughts and feedback in more detail.

When will it happen?

Your manager will confirm the option you selected on the ‘leaving your role’ form regarding whether you would like to have an exit interview in your resignation acknowledgment letter. If you’ve chosen to have one, it will be arranged by the person you named on the form and scheduled at a convenient time before your final working day.

Who will be there?

Exit interviews are usually held between you and your line manager.

If your manager is unavailable, or if you feel uncomfortable having the conversation with them, it can be arranged with another manager from your department who has experience with exit interviews.

If you feel an independent person should carry out the interview, you can request for a member of the People Team to complete your exit interview.

Each of these options are available to select on the leaving your role form.

If your exit interview is not held with your line manager, the person leading the exit interview will clarify which elements can be shared with your manager and which elements will only be included within the online submission. The online submission can be viewed by the People Directorate to support with improving staff experience and culture at UHB.

What will the conversation be like?

The person leading the exit interview will use an exit interview form to guide the discussion. The questions will look at what worked well, and what could be improved.

The form is just a guide, so they might ask other questions too, depending on what’s most relevant to you.

You’ll be encouraged to speak openly and honestly, and the person leading should ask follow-up questions to fully understand anything you raise.

The person leading might chose to take notes or input your responses directly on to the online form.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to speak to your manager or get in touch.
