Peripheral venous cannulation

This course is for all Trust staff who are responsible for performing peripheral cannulation as part of their role.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module learners should be able to:

  • Understand the key principles behind cannulation.
  • Identify the appropriate pre-procedure checks.
  • Have an understanding of relevant anatomy involved with vein selection.
  • Discuss the risks and complications associated with cannulation.
  • Identify and select the appropriate equipment.
  • Be able to follow the steps involved with the procedural skill.
  • Describe the correct procedures for documenting and providing cannula care.
