The Phlebotomy (Venepuncture) course is suitable for all Trust staff who are responsible for performing phlebotomy as part of their role. This includes employees and other contractors such locums and agency staff.

Before attending the practical session, you need to finish the online learning part of this course which can be accessed on Moodle - Phlebotomy eLearning

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module learners should be able to:

  • Understand the key principles behind phlebotomy.
  • Identify the appropriate pre-procedure checks.
  • Have an understanding of the relevant anatomy involved with vein selection.
  • Discuss the risks associated with phlebotomy.
  • Identify and select the appropriate equipment.
  • Be able to follow the steps involved with the procedural skill.
  • Describe the correct procedures for labelling, transporting, and processing blood samples.
